Up All Night: 20 Heavy Nuggets From the Golden Age of Hard Psych (Past & Present Records)

Here’s twenty tracks of American psychedelic hard rock from 1969-1973. Most of the bands on Up All Night aren’t well known (the only names I recognized were The Litter, SRC and Sir Lord Baltimore) but they share a common love of volume, wailing vocals and blistering guitars. These are loud, mean and heavy songs by long-haired rock guys turned on by Hendrix, Zeppelin and Who. While these bands never achieved the same lofty high-marks as their inspirations, there’s some interesting songs and it’s one of the few comps you can enjoy from start to finish. The best song is “Up All Night” from Detroit act SRC; from their 1969 sophomore album Milestones. It’s an example of the best that heavy psych-rock had to offer, and it also contains some elements The Stooges appropriated for “Loose”, released the following year.
