If you want an in-depth review of the new Modeselektor album, look elsewhere, because my interest in the German electronica duo’s latest begins and ends with the two songs featuring vocals from Thom Yorke. “Shipwreck”, is the better of the two, where dark synth sounds accompany Yorke’s voice as it jumps back and forth between a Prince-esque falsetto and repeated snippets. I have no idea what he’s saying, but at least he sounds good saying it. “This” is much less interesting, with a stereotypical electronica sound aimed squarely at dance-floors, and Yorke’s voice chopped up and reconfigured into an almost entirely wordless gibberish. Neither song are the return to form most Yorke/Radiohead fans were looking for after King Of Limbs, and they seem to indicate that Yorke is getting further entrenched into an electronica sound that doesn’t do him justice.
