If you’re sick of hearing the same Christmas songs over and over again, this five-song EP is as welcome as a shot of alcohol in your egg-nog. The Jigsaw Seen originally released this cover of the traditional Christmas classic back in 1989 as a 7″ single, but for this re-issue Vibro-phonic has remixed the title song, included the original version and an instrumental, and tossed in two versions another original religious song, “Jesus of Hollywood”, and turned it into an EP that fans can use to ring in the holidays, indie-rock style. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is turned into a “Paint It Black”-esque 60’s sitar romp that also shows hints of REM’s folk-rock (this was the late-80’s after all), while “Jesus of Hollywood” is another second generation psychedelic rocker that shows why The Jigsaw Seen landed a spot on the Children of Nuggets compilation. The multiple versions of each song are a bit superfluous but it beats having to hear “Jingle Bell Rock” for the 500th time. Amen.
