Steppin’ Through An Empty Time: Fairytales Can Come True Vol. 5 (Psychic Circle Records)

Another twenty rare tracks are served up in the fifth volume of this ’60s British pop-psych series. As the compilation’s title indicates, these songs fall on the lighter side of spectrum, which means there’s no mind-blowing Hendrix/Yardbirds/Stones heavy rock or menacing freakbeat aggression to be found. Rather, these are pop songs dressed up with light-psych sounds and other period touches. A few of the bands here have been featured on other comps (The Rokes, The Rattles, The Merseys), but I haven’t heard any of these songs before, which is a good thing. Some are too foppish to take seriously (“I Can Fly” by The Pattersons, “Baby Love” by  Katch 22), but there are enough good tracks like “Stop The Machine” by the Mec Op Singers (featuring cool sci-fi sounds and a hard groove) or Wishful Thinking’s mod romp “She Belongs To The Night”, to recommend Steppin’ Through An  Empty Time, if only for staunch UK Psych enthusiasts whose collections already run deep.
