The Coolest Songs In The World compilations present a cross-section of the kind of rock’n’roll bands you’re likely to hear on Little Steven’s Underground Garage radio show. Makes sense, since the E-Street guitarist selects the tracks, writes the liner notes, and puts it out on his Wicked Cool Records. Volume 5 features some newer bands like The Pipettes, The Raconteurs and the long-named Butch Walker and The Let’s Go Out Tonites, who do a dead-on T.Rex on “Hot Girls In Good Moods”. There’s also new music from old favorites Cheap Trick (who sound merely OK on “If It Takes A Lifetime”), The Saints (a downright feral “Porno Movies”) and ex-Flaming Groovie Roy Loney. Perhaps the best song here is “25 Hours A Day” an irresistibly vapid glam-era obscurity from Kim Fowley moonlighting under the name Jimmy Jukebox.
