Anyone who witnessed the Bad Brains live at their peak claims they were one of the most thrilling acts ever. This DVD, culled from a three-night CBGB stint in 1982, confirms it 100%. Captured between their self-titled debut and 1983’s Rock For Light, the group are in peak form, with HR’s energetic stage antics in a class of their own – even Iggy Pop would have a hard time keeping up with him! The sound and picture aren’t pristine (at one point a blown fuse knocks the lights out…but the band kept playing), but the energy and musicianship are insane. The crowd certainly seems to be loving it all – moshing along to the lightning-fast hardcore and skanking to the reggae songs that were so smartly sprinkled into their sets. Nineteen songs are included (some more than once), with the band tearing into old favorites “Supertouch/Shitfit,” “Banned In DC,” and set-opener “Big Take Over” (featuring stellar guitar work from the supremely underrated Dr. Know). It’s a cliché, but they really don’t make groups like this anymore. Yet another crucial document of rock history from Music Video Distributors.
